Water - our lifeblood - 1st Jun 2016

As we have begun to understand the need for sustainable use of water worldwide there has been a renewed interest in collecting rainwater. Collecting rainwater from the roof is the preferred method of water harvesting in rural Southland, where there is reasonable rainfall.

Burford concrete water storage tanks are a popular choice for storing water as concrete tanks keep the water cool, minimizing bacterial growth that can occur in water collected off buildings.

It is very important that roofs, spouting and downpipes are cleaned three to four times a year and it's a good idea to install self cleaning filters on downpipes, provided there is enough fall between spouting and storage tank.

Installing screens over the spouting prevents leaves, birds, rodents, snow and hail from collecting in the spouting. The debris is blown off by the wind, which minimizes the inconvenience of cleaning the spouting.

When downpipes go underground and back into the top of the tank, it is important that the underground pipe can be flushed out to prevent contaminants getting into the tank.

If you have rats or mice in the ceiling, do not use rat poison. It thins their blood and makes them thirsty. They will find the nearest source of water and may die in spouting or the tank. This can cause major gastro and viral illness in people and animals.

It is imperative to ensure water is of the highest quality to enable us to maintain healthy bodies. This concept also applies to animal health.

Animal health tips:

  • Animals, like humans, need water to survive.
  • Animals, like humans, are about 80% water.
  • The two most common pets, cats and dogs, need plenty of fresh water.
  • Cats are very finicky about their water; they like it fresh.
  • The longer the water sits out, the more oxygen it loses.
  • Clean the bowl frequently; bacteria from the air can grow in your pet's bowl.
  • Drinking more water can reduce urinary tract disorders in cats and dogs.

Burford also clean water tanks and can arrange for the tank to be refilled with chlorinated water. This will sterilize the tank and also kill any bacteria in the water pipes in the reticulation system of the home or farm.

Burford concrete tanks won't blow away in high winds when part full and cause unnecessary damage. Concrete tanks can be designed to suit many applications and environments. Inlets and outlets can be specified and installed into the tanks while they are being manufactured to suit your needs.
