Septic Tank Systems

Concrete septic tank systems

Burford are the leading provider of robust concrete septic tank systems

Septic tanks are the number one way for rural homeowners to treat their wastewater, whether it is domestic or dairy activities such as farm flood washing. Burford have been installing septic tank systems throughout Southland, Otago and Canterbury for over 40 years.

Septic tanks work by separating solids from liquids. They should be used as the first step in comprehensive wastewater treatment for most New Zealand farms. Wastewater is fed in to the tanks via gravity (normally using inlet pipes), which is why septic tanks are typically placed underground. Where this is not possible, Burford have come up with a number of solutions to pump the effluent into the concrete tank.

Septic tank effluent treatment

Wastewater is full of pollutants that can be damaging to your environment if released without treatment. Your regional council is required to ensure disposal of wastewater is done sustainably under The Resource Management Act (RMA) 1991. The responsibility for treating wastewater is yours.

  • Within the tank, decomposing solid particles settle and form a tank floor "sludge", whilst lighter items like fat and detergents form "scum" which floats in the water.
  • When the septic tank outlet is emptied, the treated effluent (in the "settling" area between the sludge and scum) flows out to a designated disposal area on the farm.
  • The tank outlet is positioned under the normal level of the floating scum later so that only a small number of these solids are released.
  • Over time, this effluent is filtered via soil layers, where bacteria break it down and render it harmless or neutral.

Dual chamber concrete septic tank systems

Dual chamber septic tanks have two chambers. The first chamber is a typical septic tank with an outlet and filter which holds 4500 litres. The second chamber holds 1100 litres and an effluent pump or dosing siphion can be installed here. The overall capacity is 5600 litres.

Burford can work with your farm contractors to deliver and install the dual chamber septic tank (or any of our other septic tank solutions) for you.

Our septic tank solutions can be configured to support automatic dose-delivery of septic tank effluent to soil absorption systems. Your septic tank system should be pumped out every 3 - 5 years to remove the decomposed solids from the tank bottom.
